Son is the place for those who love rocky shores, seafood, and sailboats, a small coastal gem with a big personality. The coastal gem Son is an old pilot station at the Oslo Fjord, between Hvitsten and Moss. Previously, this was the harbor used by Christiania when the fjord froze, and on old Dutch maps, Zoon Water is listed as the international name for the fjord. At the beginning of the 20th century, Son became a gathering place for artists, and the town has since attracted a number of creative souls. Nils Kjær, Ludvig Karsten, Herman Wildenvey, Ronald Fangen, and Karl Dørnberger were among the first.
Today, many well-known artists still live here, such as Turid Mjelve, Hanne Lunder, Anne Karin Helly-Hansen, Arne 'Tassulv' Samuelsen, Erik Thome, Steinar Christensen, Dorothea Volkart Nordahl, Halvor Roll, Arne Ruste, and Dag Larsen. Feel free to visit Galleri Soon, Galleri Bakgården, and Son Coastal Culture Center, and experience the history along the pier at Son Museum Harbor.
Son is particularly known for its old buildings from the Dutch period, with wooden houses and narrow alleys that are commonly associated with cities along the coast of Southern Norway. It also has a popular small boat harbor.
